Riverview has a very active and vibrant community of seniors. Many have lived here all of their adult lives and some have even helped shape the Town of Riverview. The Town's first tennis courts, the Byron Dobson Arena, the Home & Schools were all put in place years ago by these men and women intent on building a community which would enrich the lives of the families who chose to live here. Today, these same people look on with pride as the Town continues to grow.
Riverview's Parks & Recreation Department recognizes the importance of creating opportunities for a healthier and happier future for this aging generation by offering a variety of active programming, such as, Seniors Fun & Fitness classes, Tai Chi, Yoga, Walkfit, Bowling, skating, swimming, and a variety of day / overnight trips. The P&R Department also offers passive programs to accommodate wellness on a social level, such as, Card Parties, Healthy Active Living seminars, Movies, Bingo, Potlucks, BBQ, outings etc. Other special events offered include: Remembrance Day services, Carnival Day dinner (served to the seniors by Town staff / employees), annual Fall Foliage Trip, as well as, a variety of other events planned and scheduled from time to time.
The Parks & Recreation Department also makes facilities available to a number of seniors groups. Riverview has one of the most active Veterans Associations in the Atlantic Provinces and meets on a regular basis at the Coverdale Centre. Seniors maintain the Manchester bowling green. Retired teacher Bannon O'Hearn has an "incredible" seniors singing group, which practices at the Bridgedale Community Centre.
Riverview Parks & Recreation has an open door policy where any and all program ideas or events are considered. If there is something you’d like to try that isn't available in the Town, stop in or give us a call at 387-2051. We’d like to ensure there is something for everyone, every season of the year.
We consider Seniors, anyone who is "retired on a fixed income" regardless of age.
The Riverview Parks & Recreation Department offers a free of charge seniors bulletin called the "Silver Scroll" that is mailed out 2 times per year. The Silver Scroll contains details of all the activities, special events, trips, and seniors groups etc. that are available in the area. If you are interested in receiving the bulletin by mail, please contact the office at 387-2024 to give them your mailing information.
